FAQ

Question: Why did you create this site?
Because we thought people needed to see, exactly what the costs of terrorist attacks are. It is easy to think "17 killed". It gives you more food for thought when you see that those 17 have names and faces. .

Another, more personal, reason is anger. What made the idea-man the shove to start constructing the site was one day coming across a picture gallery with pictures from the murdered children of Beslan. Until then, he had been partially open to people "explaining" how the struggle of terrorists could be defended and their struggle be seen as "just". That openness, however, died that day, as he looked at the pictures. Whole families exterminated three and four generations back. Hundreds of men, women and children killed at what should have been the celebration of the children´s first school-day. His idea was to share the anger he felt with as many people as possible.

Question: What gave you the idea?
Originally, the idea came from the attempts there have been to document the number of people killed in Iraq after the country´s liberation and the number of coalition soldiers killed in the War on Terror (by Iraq Bodycount and Iraq Coalition Casualties, respectively). Both are often used by people who argue against the War on Terror, and this is where I saw something lacking: the very reason the war started, namely the victims of the terrorists that are fought. The people behind Thereligionofpeace.com filled part of the void by documenting the number of islamic terrorist attacks since September 11, but we thought a more human approach was needed - numbers are just numbers. From there and to the basic idea of this site there was only a short distance.

Question: Arent other people already doing what you do?
To a certain extent. Sites that document terrorist attacks as such exist, but the sites that attempt to name the victims almost solely concentrate on one specific attack. Thereby you easily come to think of the fight against terrorism as a national vendetta. A point we wish to make with this site is, that the attacks target us all - at home or abroad, on vacation or at work. The terrorist attacks in Mardid on March 11 2004 killed people of 16 different nationalities. On 911, the attacks in New York, Washngton DC and Shanksville killed people of over 100 nations. All colors of skin, all religions, all ages fall as victims. In the attacks we have included in the list alone, several hundred moslems have been killed.

Question: How do you choose which terrorist attacks to document?
There are limits to how much time we can invest in this project - we are normal people who also have ordinary lives to tend to. To make the task manageable, limits to the task at hand have had to be set. Generally speaking, only terrorist attacks that have killed more than 15 people have been included, and in time a limit has been set in 1991. Finally, we have chosen so far only to look at islamic terrorist attacks. Even within these limitations, there is a long, long way before we are done. A list of terrorist attacks we need help in reasearching can be found here.

Question: Why do you only include terrorist attacks conducted by islamic terrorists in your list?
It is a simple question of priorities - there is only so much time we can invest in this project, so we have to put severe limits on what to include and what not. Basically, we have made a threat assessment: which kind of terrorists threaten the most people? While Colombians and Lebanese will probably see communist terrorists as the biggest threat, to the remainder of the world the biggest threat will be islamic terrorism. Thus our choice. In the future, if we get around the preliminary task, we may include fex communist terrorist attacks, too.

Question: Why does there have to be more than 15 victims of a terrorist attack for you to cover it?
Again: it is a question of priorities. In the wee between April 23 and 29 2006 alone, there were 48 islamic terrorist attacks according to thereligionofpeace.com. We will never be able to cover all of these, even if we tried to.

Question: There are lots of islamic terrorist attacks in for example Iraq that you dont cover. Why?
This is a simple question of access to information. If you have it, we´d be delighted to hear from you. We can be contacted through the "contact" link in the lefthand column.
